JANUARY 2010
I figured that Mom would expect the BLACK BOWLS for Christmas, so I thought I would wait for
her birthday in January to throw her off. I purchased a beautiful purple alpaca sweater for Mom’s
birthday present and asked Peggy to wrap it up with the BLACK BOWLS. When Mom saw the
box, judging from the size of the box, she immediately said that it had to be the BLACK BOWLS!
Peggy did not answer, so she assumed so. As you can see from the video, she found the
sweater on top and thought that was it! As she was trying to determine what was in the clear
wrapping (the sweater), Peggy told her there was more. She looked into the box and pulled off
the tissue paper, there were those BLACK BOWLS!! You will love her expression in the video.

FEBRUARY 2010
I flew back to spend time with her mom while her caretaker, Peggy went on a vacation. About
8 years ago, a friend of mine had emailed me saying that she thinks she has the same exact
black bowls as the ones we have been passing back and forth between mom and I, would I
like to have them. When I received them, I was quite surprised to find the bowls to be exactly
the same type of bowls. Over the course of 8 years, I have sent the spare set of bowls to
Peggy to have on hand to have ready to return them back to mom for me. Mom never knew
ab
out the second set of Black Bowls and we decided it was time to expose them to mom. Peggy
found mom’s hiding place of the Black Bowls and brought them over to her house for me.
Heidi and I had served dinner to mom and when it came time for dessert (her favorite part of
the meal), we served strawberry shortcake in the Black Bowls to mom. When she finally
figured out that those were the Black Bowls, she said, you found my Black Bowls and used
them again. I said no and she did not believe me. We brought out the second set of Black
Bowls for her to see. I finally told her told her how the second set of bowls came about and
how we had been using 8 Black Bowls over the years. She thought I was being sneaky!
AUGUST 2010
My niece, Lisa, had a beautiful baby girl, Noelle, last May 10 and this is my mom’s first GREAT
Grandchild. Lisa has been planning a trip to Seattle to attend a wedding as a bride’s maid in August.
Mom has been looking forward to seeing Noelle since she was born and was counting the days down. I
sent Peggy the BLACK BOWLS prior to Lisa and Noelle’s visit and we agreed that Noelle should deliver
the BLACK BOWLS to my mom when she is first introduced to her. Peggy, Lisa and Heidi, snuggled the
BLACK BOWLS underneath the baby blanket with pink girlie stickers to surprise my mom. When they
exposed the BLACK BOWLS along with 3 month old Noelle, Mom said “OH NO”! Everyone was
laughing. The pictures describe the moment well with an “ahhhhh”. Noelle is now the youngest family
member to be initiated with BLACK BOWLS delivery. Too precious! Congratulations Lisa and Kyle in
your first newborn.
JANUARY 2011
Rod and I flew back for Peggy and Norm’s youngest daughter, Heidi’s wedding and planned to celebrate
Mom’s 88th birthday this year. This was the first time we have had the whole family together in a long
time. Both of her granddaughters and their spouse/fiancé and a great granddaughter helped celebrate
mom’s birthday. With so many people around to distract mom, we had waited until the last birthday
present to present to mom. Once mom realizes they are the Black Bowls in the box, she sits back in her
chair exasperated and glares at Joan. You will view this in the video. We had mom pose with the Black
Bowls and all of us had a good laugh.
APRIL 2011
Joan found the package in the mail from Mom with Peggy’s nelp. Black Bowls in time for Easter.
MAY 2011
Peggy and I thought Mother’s Day would be a fun time to return them back to her. I purchased
some roses for her and had them delivered to Peggy’s house so that Peggy could add the Black
Bowls to the flower box. On the greeting card I wrote:
“Oh!! Say can you see the BLACK BOWLS are here again………..WHOOPIE!!!!
By the dawn’s early light, Mom has received them again for over 10 years. You Got em back
MOM!! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY, MOM! Love you. :0)”
Mom’s great granddaughter, Noelle got into the action with mom and helped her open the box.
When I talked to Mom on the phone afterwards, she said, “I haven’t given it a thought. I guess
you get to enjoy them over and over again with my senior moments.”
Meanwhile, the BLACK BOWLS Saga continues......
MARCH 2010
Ahhh, time for chocolate easter bunnies from mom, one for Rod and one for Joan. No fighting over
one rabbit this way. And of course, Black Bowls. The kitties decided decided the box that the
BLACK BOWLS came in was more interesting.
